DL-Tartaric Acid or tartaric acid is a white crystalline organic acid that occurs naturally in many plants, especially in grapes. Salt, potassium bitartrate, commonly known as tartar cream, develops naturally in the wine-making process. These are generally mixed with sodium bicarbonate and sold as baking powder used as a yeast agent in food preparation. The acid itself is added to the diet as an antioxidant and gives it a distinctive sour taste.
